Oxbow World Longboard Tour Maldives

Kai Sallas of Honolulu won the Oxbow ASP World Longboard Tour Maldives contest today.
The final day of the contest was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Pasta Point, Chaaya Island, Maldives.
Sallas won three heats today, including a victory over newly-crowned world champion Harley Ingleby of Australia in the final.
“I’m so stoked to win this event, the waves have been super fun all week and to beat Harley in the final capped off a perfect week for me,” Sallas said.
Sallas received a score of 7.75 (out of 10) early in the final heat and never relinquished the lead. His two best waves scored a total of 15.65 points to top Ingleby’s total of 14.0.
Sallas received $10,000 for the win.
The contest was the final stop on the 2009 ASP World Longboard Tour. Ingleby clinched the 2009 world title after he won his quarterfinal heat.
Sallas finished the year ranked No. 2 to lead four Hawai’i surfers in the top 10. Hale’iwa’s Bonga Perkins, the 2008 world champion, finished No. 5. Ned Snow of the Big Island is No. 6, and Duane DeSoto of ‘Ewa is No. 8.
Sallas defeated Snow in the semifinals of today’s contest.

Oxbow World Longboard Tour Maldives

Round one of the Oxbow World Longboard Tour Maldives was completed in near flawless 4 feet plus (1.5 metre) surf at Pasta Point on Chaaya Island in the Maldives.

Defending ASP Longboard World Champion and number one seed Bonga Perkins (Hawaii) was the standout surfer posting both the top scoring single ride of the day (9.25 out of 10) and the top scoring heat of 16.75 out of 20 in his impressive win over young Australian wildcard Mitch Surman.

“It’s really good the surf here, it’s a very rippable and a perfect wave that hugs the reef and you can score with great on-face moves and nose rides, it’s really ideal” said Perkins.

“It was important to me to get the opening round heat out of the way and I really feel like I’m ready for a big event here; there’s a lot on the line for sure.”

While it was a great day for Perkins, the same cannot be said for fellow Hawaiian Duane De Soto who saw his World Title aspirations for 2009 disappear in an unlucky encounter with Troy Mothershead (USA).

De Soto came into this event 2nd on the 2009 season ratings and was a serious contender but in the overall combined highest scoring heat of the day he was narrowly edged out by Mothershead on 16.75 to De Soto’s 15.85, a heat score that would have won most other heats today.

Harley Ingelby, the current ratings leader on the 2009 ASP Oxbow World Longboard Tour was also impressive today thrashing his South African opponent Justin Bing on a score line of 15.75 to 7.00.

“An ideal start for me but there’s a long way to go in this event and I’ll simply take it heat-by-heat “said a clearly focused Ingelby after his win.

“It’s a perfect wave for us and it’s very similar to my home break at Shelley’s Beach back in Australia so I am feeling good out there and it’s just good to be off and running successfully.”

Ingelby faces an interesting round two heat tomorrow up against good friend, travelling partner and fellow Coff’s Harbour local surfer Jared Neal who defeated Keegan Edwards of Hawaii to advance.

Excellent scores were common today with such perfect conditions for the surfers.

Three time World Longboard Champion Colin McPhillips (USA/San Clemente) won the opening heat of the event and echoed the view of most surfers here saying “This is an amazing venue, probably the best I’ve been to for such an important event.”

“The waves have been pumping the whole time we’ve been here and conditions are simply perfect – It’s going to be a really special event I think.”

Other impressive heat winners today included Troy Mothershead (USA), Kai Sallas (Hawaii), Taylor Jensen (USA), Josh Constable (AUS) and Ben Skinner (Great Britain).

With an excellent outlook ahead organizers are confident of running round two tomorrow in excellent surf.

The event is live on the web and can be accessed via the mini site on the front page at www.aspworldtour.com

YXUW2nTdXlgammnoQR4A3tYHo1_r4_500ENTRIES OPEN FOR GLOBAL SURF INDUSTRIES NOOSA FESTIVAL OF SURFING 2010, PRESENTED BY GOLDEN BREED

Amateur and specialty division entries are now open for the 2010 Noosa Festival, event director Phil Jarratt announced at the weekend. Jarratt said that entries were available for on-line purchase or as a download in 11 age divisions and in 5 specialty events, including money events in Stand Up Paddle, Tandem and Noserider Trials.

The Noosa Festival, now in its 19th year, will run from Sunday, 14 March to Sunday, March 21, with some specialty events to commence on 14 March and amateur age divisions from 15 March. The official opening ceremony and paddle-out will take place from 5pm on 14 March, following the running of a 5K stand up paddle race on Laguna Bay. Competitor registration will be available at the Golden Breed concept store from midday to 4pm on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14.

Jarratt said that the 2010 festival would take approximately 600 competitors spread across all divisions, and that entries in amateur divisions would be on a first come, first served basis.

“We’ve also opened up the family challenge event to the public for next year. It proved hugely popular this year, so we’ve expanded it to 24 teams. Teams must consist of two generations, eg mother/son, father/daughter.”

Jarratt said he was delighted to welcome back lead sponsors Global and Golden Breed, and that further sponsorships would be announced at the end of August.

 YUMEYA  OXBOW JAPAN

Harley Ingleby (AUS), 25, won the Yumeya presents Oxbow ASP WLT at Tahara, over Duane de Soto (HAW), 32, in peaky two-to-three foot surf (1 metre) after a marathon day of competition at Long Beach in Tahara Aichi, Japan.

The Yumeya presents Oxbow ASP WLT at Tahara marks the first of two events on the ASP WLT calendar, which crowns the undisputed ASP World Longboard Champion at year’s end. The next contest slated on the 2009 season will be the Oxbow ASP WLT in the Maldives which will be held in October.

After battling through five heats today, Ingleby found the leftover endurance to finish up strong, jumping out to an early lead over de Soto and carrying the lead throughout the 35-minute final to take out the Yumeya presents Oxbow ASP WLT at Tahara.

“It’s just the best feeling in the world,” Ingleby said. “It was pretty hard out there and Duane is such a good surfer. I’m just so stoked I don’t even know what to say, I’m lost for words.”

Ingleby was in an identical situation last year after the ASP WLT in France and is hoping to put together a second solid result to take out this year’s ASP World Longboard Title.

“You couldn’t dream of a better start to the year,” Ingleby said. “Hopefully I can put together a stronger second event this year”.
