LHSBELLS BEACH, Victoria (Saturday, October 3, 2009) – Perth Standlick (Bondi, NSW) today capped off a remarkable week of competition, winning the Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach in big, testing conditions.

Having seen the best junior surfers in Australasia converge on the famed stretch of coast for the final event of the 2009 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series, the Billabong Pro Junior Bells Beach saw some amazing performances in massive seas.

None more impressive was the actions of Standlick who mastered the three metre waves en-route to his first ever ASP Australasian Pro Junior title.

“I’m over the moon,” an elated Standlick said. “It’s been a long time coming, so I’m going to enjoy this one for some time to come.”

Having had a disjointed year marred through injury and missed contests, Standlick was relieved to have finally achieved his dream.

“It’s been such a crazy year with injury and the like,” he said. “But, to finally win one – it’s amazing!”

Defeating Davey Cathels (North Narrabeen, NSW) in a tightly-fought affair, Standlick accrued a massive 14.50 (out of a possible 20) to Cathels’ 10.25.

Going blow-for-blow, the two combatants put on a great show in front of a gallery of spectators.

Having been the standout all week, Standlick was awarded the final title of the 2009 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series thanks to the help of local knowledge and nous.

“I’ve been coming down to Bells for some time now,” Standlick said. “So I feel comfortable out here, but staying with the Bell-Warren’s and other local guys has definitely been the catalyst for this performance.”

Enjoying the bigger conditions, Standlick was relieved to finally contest an event in challenging waves.

“I love surfing when it gets big,” he admitted. “It relaxes me and makes me feel comfortable in my surfing knowing I don’t have to hassle for waves.”

Having been in amazing form throughout the event, including a perfect 10-point ride in the quarter-final yesterday, Cathels was disappointed to have fallen short of the crown.

“It’s disappointing, but that’s surfing,” Cathels said. “I felt good, but I think I surfed my final yesterday.”

Despite finishing second, not all is lost for Cathels who finished third on the ASP Australasian Pro Junior ratings guaranteeing him a spot in the Billabong ASP World Junior Titles.

“Yeah I’m stoked with qualifying,” he said. “Surfing against all the best junior’s in the world at my home break will be unreal.”

Joining Cathels will be Owen Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) and Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW), who finished first and second respectively on the ratings, with Christopher Friend (Alexandra Headland, QLD) and Garrett Parkes (Suffolk Park, NSW) bringing up the final two places for the Australian team.

NZ TO HOST JUNIOR WORLD TITLE

New Zealand have won a bid to host next year’s world junior surfing championships.

The championships will be held at Piha Beach, near Auckland, from January 20-28.

The championships will see the world’s best under-18s in action, competing both individually and for their countries.

“We’re really happy to announce that New Zealand will be the 2010 location for the world junior surfing championship,”

International Surfing Association president Fernando Aguerre said.

“It is an amazing location with perfect waves and a great surfing culture.

“It’s really important to note that this is the first time after more than 25 years that the ISA holds an event of this magnitude in the Australasia zone

Dean Bowen wins Billabong Pro Junior Bali

Keramas Beach, Bali, Indonesia: Dean Bowen (Australia/NSW Sth Coast/Gerroa) today won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade – 5 Rated Billabong Pro Junior Bali.

Held in magnificent surf over all four days at the now famous Keramas Rivermouth on the east coast of Bali, Bowen’s powerful backhand on-face surfing proved too strong for Teale Vanner (Australia/Kangaroo Island/SA) in a one sided final with Bowen’s top two rides of a 7 and a 7.5 and final total of 14.5 eclipsing Vanner on a two wave total of 7.5
Bowen’s win today saw him significantly jump from 10th up to 2nd place on the ASP Australasian 2009 Pro Junior ratings behind Owen Wright. “It’s good to be up on the ratings but I’m not really concerned with ratings this year, more focused on winning events and simply surfing good” added 18 year old Bowen who earlier this year also won the World under 18 Surfing title.

Teale Vanner, who throughout this event had posted multiple 9 point plus outstanding barrel rides and earlier in the day scored a perfect ten point barrel ride in his quarter final seemed to be hunting for tubes in the final but was unable to find any while Bowen maintained his powerful and vertical top to bottom attack on the wave to take the win.

“I thought I’d find a few barrels in the final but it wasn’t to be” said Vanner. “It’s been a great event for me and I’m so relieved to do well here and score some fantastic waves as well.” Vanner is a former Australian Junior Champion but his year-to-date on the ASP Australasian Pro Junior series had been a shocker and in all 6 events prior to this one, had not made one single heat!

“I was down on confidence and really didn’t know what I had to do to find a result but surfing here has really turned my year around and to score a perfect 10 and quite a few high 9 point rides feels great.”

Equal 3rd placed surfers today were Chris Bennetts (Australia/Gold Coast) who was eliminated in his semi-final by Dean Bowen in the final seconds and Dale Staples (South Africa/Cape St Francis) who had been a standout in deep tube rides throughout the event.

Indonesian surfers had surfed exceptionally throughout this event and their top placed surfer here was Raditya Rhondi (Bali) who made it through to the final 16 surfers and the final day but had to settle for equal 13th place overall. Surfers at this year’s Billabong Pro Junior Bali almost unanimously agreed that this event was the best ever ASP Australasian Pro Junior they had competed in.

Keramas the wave, across all four days exposed it’s variety of super high performance qualities, from small and perfect on day one, to solid onshore but superbly carvable on day 2, then epic solid powerful barrelling slabs on day 3 to rifling perfect barrels on high performance midsized waves on the final day.

As the only ASP rated event for 2009 in Indonesia, it was an excellent event.

AUSTRALIAN SURF MASTER TITLES

The stage is set for the best surfing talents in the country as the Australian Surfmasters Titles prepares to glisten again in 2009.

Running as a part of the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival this August, the Australian Surfmasters Titles will see the best 164 ‘shortboard’ surfers from across the nation converging upon Port Macquarie.

With 10 prestigious national titles, and the opportunity to represent Australia at the ISA World Surfmasters Titles, up for grabs, Surfing NSW’s CEO Mark Windon predicts the surfing on show to be of the highest order.

“There will no doubt be some outstanding performances taking place as competitors in all divisions fight for the opportunity to represent Australia on the international stage.”

Featuring an eclectic combination of competitors, the Australian Surfmasters Titles is an important competitive outlet for surfers spanning all ages.

“This event marks a competitive opportunity for competitors of all ages,” Windon continued.

“It recognises the older generations whilst still celebrating the youthful dynamics of the younger generation.”

RED BULL QLD
THIS August, Red Bull is rolling out the red carpet for Queensland’s junior surfers, as the ‘Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Qualifiers’ hit the Gold and Sunshine Coast for the most anticipated junior surf events of the year.

Red Bull and Mick Fanning are giving QLD and northern NSW best young surfers the opportunity to possibly compete head-to-head against Australia’s best pro-junior surfers.

Competitors between the ages of 14 and 20 (Girls and Boys of all ages will be competing in the single division), and dream of one day becoming a professional surfer could be on the fast-track to fortune and fame as Red Bull and Mick Fanning are on the lookout for surfing’s next big star!

The first QLD Qualifier will be held on the Sunshine Coast from August 1 to 2 and is expected to attract a stacked field of the region’s best young surfers.

An interesting innovation from Red Bull is the single division format, which means all surfers (boys and girls) across the 14 to 20-year-old age bracket will be competing directly against each other.

The top four surfers from each ‘Qualifier’ event advance through to the ‘Trials,’ which is a battle between the best 24 surfers from the six ‘Qualifier’ events held across NSW and QLD throughout June, July and August.

At the end of the ‘Trials,’ the top ten amateur junior surfers will then compete in the ‘Finals’ against ten invited pro-junior surfers, hand picked by Mick Fanning himself.

The ‘Trials’ and ‘Finals’ competition will be held from August 28 to 30, at Cronulla Beach and will implement the innovative ‘Torched’ running format- introduced at the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters in 2008.

There has also been an unprecedented amount of hype surrounding the 2009 Red Bull Junior Surf Masters prize pool.

At the ‘Finals,’ First prize takes home a generous share of the AUD$45,000 prize pool, which is the biggest ever awarded for a junior surf event in Australia.

The event and subsequent prizes have been specifically designed to help up-and-coming surfers launch a professional career into the World Qualifying Series and beyond!

The Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Qualifiers are a mobile event – Check location and schedule on competition day by calling the Surfing Queensland Event Hotline: (07) 3030 6388

The Red Bull Junior Surf Masters QLD Qualifiers is proudly brought to you by Red Bull and Surfing Queensland.

BIG SWELL EXPECTED FOR  Hurley U.S OPEN

Forecasters say Southern California is in for some big surf.
The National Weather Service says northward-advancing swells are expected to produce a rise in surf along south-facing shores Thursday night. The swell should peak Friday with some sets to seven feet, and persist through the weekend.SLATER

That’s good news for the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach,

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Hurley U.S. Open saw reigning ASP World Champions Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, FL), 37, and Stephanie Gilmore (Tweed Heads, AUS), 21, put on a show for the Huntington Beach crowd today with their dynamic skills to post top scores while advancing through their respective rounds at the famed event in the two-to-three foot surf at South Huntington Beach Pier today. Coco Ho (Sunset Beach, HI), 18, who is a rookie on the Women’s ASP World Tour, was also a leader in the women’s ASP 6-Star event, posting the highest scores amongst the top seeds.

All surfers competing in the premier event are looking to capitalize on the bevy of points available towards qualification for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour, while the winner-take-all U.S.$100,000 historic prize purse has attracted the likes of ASP Dream Tour Surfers such as Slater and former ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (Tweed Heads, AUS), 28.

Slater is fresh off of his ASP Dream Tour campaign and has crossed the globe from South Africa alongside his fellow ASP World Tour surfers to compete in the prestigious Hurley U.S. Open. The iconic regular-footer wore a U.S. Open singlet for his first heat in approximately a decade and appropriately bashed the day’s highest single wave score of 9.33 out of 10 en route to his heat victory.
THE Hurley US Open has thrown down the biggest single pay packet in surfing history with a whopping $122,000 for first prize.

That’s more than double that of an ASP WCT event with the dream tour winners looking at $36,000 each event.
